The Icelandic Institute of Natural History (IINH) is a public government institution. The more than 50 employees at the IINH carry out diverse research and monitoring activities. The institute conducts basic and applied research on the nature of Iceland with a main emphasis on botany, ecology, taxonomy, geology and zoology. It maintains scientific specimen collections and databases, assembles literature on the natural history of Iceland, operates the Icelandic Bird-Ringing Scheme and provides environmental consultancy. The institute advises on sustainable use of natural resources and land development and assesses the conservation status of species, habitats and ecosystems. About one-third of the scientific collection is registered in relational databases (Oracle, Access and Filemaker). The estimated total size of the collection is about 2 million items.
